Straight & Level Construction is owned by John Martin, General Contractor.
John began his career in construction by learning from the ground up with a local general contractor. In doing so, he learned the language, how to communicate with subs, material knowledge, and the basics of remodeling. John began managing jobs for the company and found he enjoyed the personal interaction with the clients in helping to guide them through their remodeling projects.
John founded Straight & Level in 2004, striving to create positive experiences for clients working with a general contractor on residential projects. In a short time, he has quickly gained recognition for the quality of his projects, winning multiple Contractor of the Year awards from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) at both a local and regional level.
To many people, a remodeling job is the stuff of nightmares, but we want to change that perception for our clients. Straight & Level is happy to work with clients during the project at whatever level of participation that they feel comfortable. Without a GC on site who can lead, listen, and educate, any project will fall short of expectations.

Straight & Level Construction is excited to announce the selection of one of our projects to be included on the HGTV program Bang for Your Buck, airing Friday, August 14, 2009 at 8:30pm CST. The show, featuring three outdoor projects in Austin, will feature the outdoor kitchen created for the Willis family. This project has been previously recognized when it was awarded a Contractor of the Year (CoTY) award by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry from the Austin chapter of NARI (www.austinnari.org) and as a regional winner for the National NARI CoTY awards.
To create this dramatic backyard makeover, Straight & Level added an outdoor kitchen, which acts as the centerpiece of an eye-catching outdoor entertainment area for friends and family. The kitchen is set off by a cedar-shingle roof atop the stand-alone structure, held up by wood columns sitting in masonry bases and custom cedar corbels. The kitchen is any chef’s dream, including granite countertops with bar sitting-area, travertine floor, gas grill, infrared burner, smoker, cable TV and stereo. To complete the new entertainment area, the surrounding area was landscaped to include terraces, a bocce ball court, and a custom copper fountain embedded into the outer wall of the kitchen.
HGTV’s show, Bang for Your Buck, shows how choices in remodeling can make a difference in how much you earn back when the house is sold. In the episode, a real estate agent and designer examine renovations of three outdoor areas in Austin, all with similar budgets. The experts then determine who got the most bang for their buck, revealing which remodeling choices were the best investments.
